News of the u18 tournament
By PETER MARTIN
THE Border A hockey team were fortunate to come away from their opening match of the 2009 U18 tournament with a 5-5 draw against a tenacious Eastern Gauteng side at Kat Leisure Park in East London yesterday.
The exciting game was played at a furious pace with action moving from one side to the other throughout.
Border were 4-5 down when the hooter went for the end of the game, having secured a short corner only seconds before, and with Gauteng East failing to clear their line, some clever stickwork from Daniel Schroeder beat the East Gauteng goalkeeper to force the draw amid much relief from the players and spectators.
At once stage, however, Border were leading 4-1 but Gauteng East clawed their way back into the game with three quick goals, two through poor defence work by Border and one through a penalty flick.
Then, with time running out they then moved into the lead and with less than a minute to go all seemed lost for Border.
But just like Eastern Gauteng, Border was not prepared to throw in the towel, and the result was a nail-biting finish with the large crowd screaming encouragement for the home side.
The other four Border goals were scored by Matthew Taberer, who opened the scoring in the eighth minute, Andrew Buckley, who had a storming game, Garth Hirst and Jason McLachlan. For Border Thambo Luvuyo, Hirst and McLachlan were all over the park and played well. For Eastern Gauteng their link Deryck May had an excellent game, while Geoffrey Scott was all-aggression, especially in defence. They each scored for the visitors.
Two teams to watch out for in the A section are Southern Gauteng, who beat North West 7-0 and then outplayed Boland 5-0 later in the day, and KwaZulu-Natal Inland, who annhilated a hapless Mpumalanga 18-0 in a morning match and then beat Eastern Province 6-1 after lunch.
EP meanwhile, had tasted sucess by beating KwaZulu-Natal Coastal 4-1 earlier in the day.
The other big win was Northern Gauteng’s 9-0 victory over North West.
In the B section the Border B team won their opening match against Northern Free State 7-0 and then in an early evening game they were the victors 2-0 over Southern Free State to get their campaign off to a good start.

October Viewpoint Article by Steve Jaspan
“Shrinkage”! That’s a common terms used when merchandise is stolen from the shop floor. However, I think it’s also a good word for the massive, somewhat scary loss of young sportspersons from formal sport after they leave School.
This is certainly not unique to hockey, nor to South Africa, being a worldwide phenomenon. However, it is affecting the viability of clubs; it is resulting in many talented sportspersons being “lost in translation” from school to adult life.
This affects the quality of national and provincial sport, including hockey, as well as the pool of players (athletes) ultimately also administrators, umpires/referees, coaches and technical officials. It even has a profound effect on the base of hockey and its funding. So what should we do to reduce this “shrinkage”? We urgently need a strategy.
In The Netherlands, for example, talented young players leaving school are identified and offered bursaries to top universities, technical institutions and clubs. Other nations have similar
talent spotting and bursary/job placement programmes.
South Africa does this in a minor way but unless there is a more universal, all embracing strategy we will continue to “bleed” talent and lose ground competitively.
Clearly this strategy has to be allied to an Academy system or rationale in which the captured talent is then developed via quality coaching, mentoring, inculcation of life skills and tertiary education.
The relationship between our top schools and clubs, especially “Old Boys/Girls Clubs” is vital and has to be strengthened. The sooner a combined strategy between the School and the Club is evolved the better. The strategy, however, must be consistent with national high performance
coaching and preparation of elite athletes.
However, a strategy that cannot be cost‐effectively implemented is close to useless, so a pragmatic and realistic strategy must be easy to implement. Once implemented, bench‐marking or key performance indicators of progress must inform the review process.
The bottom line is that if we do not address this “shrinkage” with innovative strategies our sport, and in particular hockey, will suffer tremendously.
